Pathology examines tissue and thus helps to make diagnoses. Until now, this has mainly been done under the microscope. The Luks announced on Monday that the move into the new building marks the beginning of the era of digital pathology in Lucerne. Microscopes will gradually be replaced by monitors and digital images will increasingly be assessed with the support of artificial intelligence.

According to the press release, molecular pathology is also playing an increasingly important role. This is the basis for "personalized medicine", according to the press release.

The Institute of Pathology includes the fields of histology, cytology and molecular pathology. The institute employs 60 people, 15 of whom are specialist pathologists.

The costs for the new building amounted to 22 million Swiss francs, according to the press release. The old building from 1933 was constructed in the Bauhaus style and is a listed building. Part of it will continue to be used by the pathology department.
