The areas south of the railroad line are particularly affected, according to the statement. Specifically Niederuster and Riedikon as well as parts of Kirchuster, Nänikon - which lies partly north of the railroad line - and Werrikon.
All the pipes in these areas are now being flushed, which will take until Sunday. It will not be clear until Monday whether the flushing will have the desired effect. The residents affected should take appropriate precautions.
According to the press release, the tap water in the rest of the city is not contaminated. This is supplied by other pumping stations. According to Energie Uster AG, the cause of the contamination remains unclear. This was noticed on Thursday.
Do not wash dishes
In addition to the drinking ban, tap water should not be used to prepare or treat food, such as for washing salads or mixing baby food. The water is also not suitable for washing dishes and cutlery.
Tap water can be boiled to obtain drinking water. The city also recommends mineral water as an alternative.
