From 2026, the canton of Nidwalden will be able to process administrative procedures online. The cantonal government intends to put an e-government platform into operation on this date, as announced by the State Chancellery on Friday.

However, a prerequisite for the launch of electronic legal transactions is that the federal government has introduced the electronic identity (E-ID) by then, the press release stated. The E-ID is necessary so that citizens can identify and authenticate themselves electronically.

The digital transformation of the administration is described in the press release as a major technical and organizational step. Furthermore, the legal basis for electronic legal transactions must be created. For this reason, the Administration of Justice Act should be partially revised.

The State Chancellery explained that current legislation requires certain administrative procedures to be sent by post and signed by hand. This also applies to the delivery of legally relevant documents or the opening of decrees, appeal decisions or judgments.

According to the press release, the Government Council has submitted the revised law for consultation. This will last until December 20, 2024.
