Michael Sanderling will remain at the conductor's desk of the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra until 2029. The orchestra has extended the contract with its chief conductor by three years.

With a five-year contract, Sanderling took over the baton of the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra in the 2021/22 season as the successor to James Gaffigan. As the orchestra announced on Friday, the contract has been extended ahead of schedule until and including the 2028/29 season.

Sanderling is 57 years old and comes from Berlin. He is a trained cellist and was chief conductor of the Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra before coming to Lucerne. In Lucerne, he emphasized the late romantic repertoire.
