The canton of Lucerne will be working with the Microsoft 365 cloud software from 2025. According to a press release issued on Monday, the cantonal administration expects annual costs of 4.4 million Swiss francs for its operation.

With the cloud-based Microsoft 365, the canton of Lucerne is focusing on flexible, location-independent collaboration with seamless transitions between working in the office, mobile working and working from home, the State Chancellery announced on Monday.

A cloud refers to the storage of data on external media. This means that data can be accessed from anywhere with an internet connection.

According to the press release, the introduction of cloud solutions is set to begin in October this year. The first applications should be running in the administration and courts from fall 2025. Among other things, calls will now be made via "Teams" instead of "Skype".

According to the press release, the investment costs amount to 5.8 million francs. The annual operating costs amount to around 4.4 million francs. According to the canton, this represents additional costs of around 500,000 francs compared to the current solution. However, Microsoft 365 offers "significant added value", according to the government.
