Former Solothurn cantonal councillor Thomas Wallner died on Monday shortly before his 86th birthday. This was announced by the Solothurn State Chancellery on Friday. Until his election in 1992, the CVP politician worked as a secondary school teacher and principal.

As a historian, Wallner, who taught German and history at the cantonal school in Solothurn, was intensively involved with the history of the canton of Solothurn. The title of his doctoral thesis at the University of Zurich was "The Canton of Solothurn and the Swiss Confederation 1841-1847".

The Director of Economic Affairs presided over the government in 1996 and 1999 as Landammann and was a member of the cantonal government until 2003. Wallner lived in Oberdorf SO and would have been 86 years old in a few days' time.
