The voters of Emmen LU support the expansion of the Meierhöfli school complex despite the high costs. On Sunday, they approved a loan of CHF 31.4 million. The municipality originally expected the costs to be around CHF 10 million lower.

The proposal was approved by voters with a 71% share of yes votes (4080 yes to 1675 no votes). The turnout was 36 percent.

According to the municipality, the fact that the school building project is more expensive is due to inflation and additional elements that were added to the original project. These include a photovoltaic system, a comprehensive renovation of the surroundings, the renovation of the sewage system and investments in earthquake and fire protection.

The current Meierhöfli school building has space for twelve primary classes. However, up to 17 classes are taught there. There is a lack of group rooms and support rooms, as well as space for childcare, integrative support and school social work.

With the extension, the school complex will have space for 18 primary classes and six kindergartens. The existing gymnasium will be converted into an assembly hall and replaced by a double gymnasium.
