The city of Biel/Bienne BE is honoring Nemo with this year's Culture Prize. In particular, it honors the music star's victory at the Eurovision Song Contest in Malmö in May.

Nemo symbolizes the diversity and quality of Biel's cultural activities, the Biel municipal council announced on Thursday. Nemo stands not only musically for values such as openness, tolerance, courage and changeability.

Nemo was born and grew up in Biel. The strong identification of the talented singer with the city, which the non-binary person has emphasized in the media worldwide, is an extraordinary enrichment, according to the communiqué.

The Biel/Bienne Culture Prize is endowed with 10,000 francs. It is awarded annually by the city government on behalf of the city's culture commission.

The award will be presented on 3 September at Chessu, the autonomous youth center in the former gas boiler in Biel's city center. At the same event, the city will also honor the Musique des Jeunes de Bienne (MJB), founded by Jean-Claude Clénin in 1974, for its cultural achievements.
