People who have been temporarily admitted should be able to bring family members to Switzerland. The responsible committee of the Council of States rejects motions from the SVP that want to remove this possibility by a narrow majority.

The identical motions were submitted by SVP member of the Council of States Esther Friedli (SG) and the SVP parliamentary group. The State Policy Committee of the Council of States (SPK-S) rejected the motions by 6 votes to 5 with 1 abstention and 6 votes to 4 with 1 abstention respectively, as reported by the Parliamentary Services on Wednesday.

After three years of residence in Switzerland, temporarily admitted persons can apply for their spouse or children to join them. The main prerequisite for this is that they are not dependent on social welfare.

The Commission majority refers to the fundamental right to respect for family life enshrined in the Federal Constitution and also in the European Convention on Human Rights.
