At the end of June 2024, 146,274 people were living in the city of Bern, as announced by the President's Office on Tuesday. The proportion of foreign residents remained stable at 24.9 percent.
The Swiss resident population recorded a decrease, while the foreign resident population increased significantly. The fact that their share nevertheless remained stable at 24.9 percent has to do with naturalizations.
In the first half of the year, a total of 705 births and 548 deaths were registered in the city of Bern, resulting in a positive birth balance of 157 children. In addition, more people moved to Bern than moved away. The positive migration balance is 244 people.
Since the beginning of 2022, people with trans identity or a variant of gender development have been able to change their gender and first name quickly and unbureaucratically. Initially, this option was widely used. In the first half of 2022, 16 changes were made. In the first six months of 2024, there were still five people.
