Hospitals are to receive more money for their further training services. The cantonal government is considering an adjustment of CHF 15,000 per full-time post in further training.

In future, the remuneration for further training for doctors in specialties that are not undersupplied should amount to CHF 30,000, and CHF 65,000 for those in undersupplied specialties or regions. CHF 30,000 is earmarked for pharmaceutical training.

Today, further training is offered in around 20 institutions, as announced by the Bernese Health, Social Affairs and Integration Directorate on Thursday.

In addition, compensation for outpatient services provided by the two children's clinics in the Canton of Bern is to be increased by ten million francs on a recurring basis.

With these two measures, the cantonal government wants to relieve the burden on areas that do not cover costs. The new payments are to be introduced on January 1, 2026 and amount to a total volume of around CHF 30 million per year. In order for the measures to be implemented, amendments need to be made to the Hospital Care Ordinance and the Hospital Care Act.

Many hospitals are currently going through a difficult phase. They are under great financial pressure and are making losses. Some are even lacking liquidity, with the result that the canton of Bern set up a CHF 100 million rescue package in the summer.

Hospitals usually cite inadequate tariff compensation as the reason for their difficulties. The inadequate financing of further medical training is also criticized.
