Unaccompanied, underage asylum seekers are to be housed in the Neubad district of Basel. The canton has purchased an apartment building on Reiterstrasse for this purpose.
The government approved the purchase of the property at Reiterstrasse 1 as financial assets of the municipality of Basel-Stadt, it announced on Tuesday. The apartment building is to be made available to social welfare services - initially for the accommodation of unaccompanied, underage asylum seekers.
Alternatively, the property is also suitable as a residential home or for renting out small apartments to poor people, it added.
