The Bern cantonal police have launched a multi-year campaign to prevent motorcycle accidents. Under the name "schliifts?!", the police want to raise awareness of driving behavior, especially on mountain passes, as they announced on Monday.

When the weather is fine and the roads are dry, "some motorcyclists mistake the mountain pass roads for a race track", according to the press release. For this reason, the cantonal police will be increasing their presence on pass roads over the next few weeks, giving preventative advice, distributing flyers and carrying out checks. According to the press release, these measures should help to reduce the number of serious traffic accidents.

In recent years, there has been an upward trend in fatal motorcycle accidents, as well as a high number of injuries. So far this year, five motorcyclists have had fatal accidents on Bernese roads.
