This weekend, the Antikenmuseum Basel is opening three new permanent exhibitions on its collection of internationally important Greek ceramics with free admission and a festive program. The upper floors of the building have been renovated over the last two years. The ancient masterpieces will be restaged there, as the museum announced on Friday.

The first exhibition, entitled "Treasures of the collection and their stories", is dedicated to the history of the museum, which opened in 1966. A "treasure chamber" with around 50 masterpieces forms the highlight of this exhibition, according to the press release. One room also explains how the archaeologists meticulously carry out provenance research. This has increasingly become a focus of attention at the Basel museums in recent years and is financially supported by the federal government and the canton.

The second exhibition takes visitors to the "World of the Etruscans". Ceramics, jewelry, weapons and everyday objects from this first advanced civilization on the Italian peninsula are on display. The third exhibition is entitled "How a masterpiece is created". It presents a variety of Greek vases and shows how they were made and used.

To mark the opening, the Museum of Antiquities is inviting the public to visit free of charge on September 14 and 15. The program includes guided tours, workshops, short lectures and live music, according to the museum.
