The Gerber bakery in Riehen BS is closing indefinitely on July 27. A business interruption with renovation is planned. What form the business will take and whether it will reopen at all will be decided next year, as the co-managing director told the Keystone-SDA news agency on Monday.

The closure of the Gerber bakery is not for financial reasons, the co-managing director continued. The reason for this is the desire for family time after many years of hard work. There is no succession solution for the business.

The bakery on Lörracherstrasse has existed since 1910, according to the company's website. Fritz Gerber took over the business in 1949. Since 2002, Thomas and Barbara Gerber have been running the business in the third generation.

This is the last traditional bakery in Riehen. However, the business will not disappear completely from the municipality. In December 2023, the "Patrizias Schoggi-Paradies" confectionery opened a bakery, meaning that this trade will continue to be practised in Riehen.

End of several bakeries in Basel

On Saturday, the well-known traditional bakery Krebs on Spalenring in Basel closed, causing a stir in the city and beyond. The reason was the difficulty in "recruiting specialist staff" to continue running the bakery after retirement, as the Krebs family wrote on their website. The Sutter Begg company will take over the business and reopen in August.

In recent years, several family businesses in Basel have been affected by the "death of bakeries". Lüthi Begg, for example, closed in 2020. The Schneider bakery also closed its doors in 2022.
