The seats on Bern's city council are in high demand: 534 Bernese men and women want to be elected to parliament at the end of November.

These are 268 women and 266 men, as announced by the City of Bern on Tuesday at the Erlacherhof. The list numbers were then drawn. There are a total of 19 lists to choose from.

The Bern City Council has 80 members. The number of candidates is slightly higher than in the last elections: 533 women and men stood in 2020, compared to 510 in 2016.

Exciting municipal council election

The starting position for the municipal council elections, which will also be decided on the basis of proportional representation, has been known for some time. The red-green-center alliance (RGM) wants to defend its four seats in the five-member municipal government with a list of four candidates. The alliance of the center-right parties is aiming to win a second seat with a list of five. Political exotics are not running this time.

The incumbent Alec von Graffenried (GFL) will be challenged by municipal councillor Marieke Kruit (SP) as well as National Councillor Melanie Mettler (GLP) and councillor Janosch Weyermann (SVP). If you want to be mayor, you also have to be elected to the municipal council.
