Switzerland slipped into the year 2025 on Wednesday night. In many places in the country, New Year's Eve was celebrated with fireworks and parties in the freezing cold. But old traditions are also part of the New Year.

The highlight of New Year's Eve in Zurich was the 15-minute fireworks display that lit up the night sky over Lake Zurich. Shortly before this, all the lights around the lake basin were extinguished.

In the city of Bern, the bells of the cathedral rang out the old year. This was followed by a full peal of bells to ring in the New Year.

A silent disco was held at the Bô Noël Christmas market in Lausanne. Visitors were able to dance to the sounds of their choice with the help of headphones. In Biel/Bienne BE, visitors could skate on the Place de l'Esplanade until late into the night.

In Hospental UR, the traditional New Year's Eve sledging took place on December 31. At midnight, everyone gathered on the village bridge to ring in the New Year with fireworks and a free cuppa.
