Like her husband King Harald V, Norway's Queen Sonja now also has a pacemaker. The 87-year-old was fitted with the pacemaker at the Royal Hospital in Oslo. The procedure was successful and the monarch is doing well, the Norwegian royal family announced. She will remain in hospital for one or two more days.

Sonja was temporarily admitted to hospital in the town of Lillehammer, around 140 kilometers north of Oslo, at the weekend due to atrial fibrillation during a ski trip. After a short time, she was discharged from hospital with a normal heart rhythm.

Atrial fibrillation is the most common form of cardiac arrhythmia. The heart usually beats too quickly and irregularly. If it remains untreated, it can lead to strokes, for example. Atrial fibrillation should not be confused with arrhythmia in the ventricles. These are often more serious.

Sonja's husband King Harald (87) has also been wearing a pacemaker for almost a year. He fell ill with an infection during a vacation trip to Malaysia in February 2024, whereupon he was initially fitted with a temporary pacemaker before flying back home. After his return, this was replaced with a permanent pacemaker at the Imperial Hospital.
