A storm depression has caused severe damage in almost all regions around the Aegean and claimed one life. According to the fire department, the Greek tourist island of Rhodes was hit the hardest. In 600 cases, firefighters had to be called out to rescue people and pump water out of flooded houses. On the island of Limnos, a village had to be evacuated due to flooding. One man died there, according to the fire department.

The Greek Civil Defense prohibited traffic on Rhodes until Monday. Only the fire department, police and emergency services are allowed to drive. "We have had to respond to 1,100 incidents across the country so far," said a spokesperson for the Greek fire department on Greek television. The storm is accompanied by gale-force winds. It also snowed heavily in north-western Greece, as reported by Greek radio.

Danger not yet over

The weather office (EMY) warned that the danger was not yet over. There will also be heavy rainfall in central Greece in the coming hours. The storm was preceded by a long period of low rainfall with unusually high temperatures. Such extreme weather conditions will occur more frequently in the future, with climate change making them more likely, it said.
