Stahl Gerlafingen in the canton of Solothurn has decided not to cut 120 jobs for the time being. The steelworks, which belongs to the Italian Beltrame Group, is once again making use of the instrument of short-time working.

In consultation with the owner family, Stahl Gerlafingen announced on Wednesday that it wanted to wait for the announced support from politicians.

"If all political projects find a majority in the councils, Stahl Gerlafingen would be given a stable perspective for the future," CEO Alain Creteur was quoted as saying in the press release. According to the company, this would allow the Beltrame Group to remain at the site.

According to Creteur, Stahl Gerlafingen never demanded subsidies, but rather the restoration of fair competitive conditions. Politicians are discussing a temporary reduction in grid costs, for example. The use of domestic steel in public buildings is also under discussion.
