A guard soldier in Sweden has suffered a life-threatening injury in an accident in front of the Royal Palace in Stockholm. He slipped on ice, a spokesman for the royal guard told the German Press Agency.

The bayonet - a type of knife that is mounted on the rifle - penetrated the right side of his head, the spokesman said. Initially there was a danger to life.

Bayonets were removed as a precaution

Thanks to rapid first aid by his comrades and emergency surgery, the man's condition was stabilized. He now looks well, the spokesman continued.

As a precaution, the bayonets of the guards had been removed as long as the weather conditions with snow and ice persisted. The police have launched an investigation into the incident.
