Tourism Significant increase in Chinese tourists in southern Ticino
Mendrisiotto is booming as a travel destination for Chinese tourists. Ticino Tourism has confirmed a corresponding media report in the newspaper "Corriere del Ticino". According to the report, the proportion of Chinese tourists there has increased by over 500 percent compared to 2019.

In fact, the proportion of Chinese tourists has increased by 564% compared to the year before the coronavirus pandemic, as the marketing and communications manager of Ticino Tourism explained to the Keystone-SDA news agency.
According to the report, the Mendrisio region registered 6,185 overnight stays by Chinese tourists in the current year up to and including the end of September. In 2019, there were 931 overnight stays, as Ticino Tourism notes.
In contrast, the Locarno region has recorded a 29% drop in Chinese tourists in the current year, the Bellinzona region a drop of 19% and the Lugano region a drop of 38% compared to 2019.
The proportion of Chinese tourists in Switzerland as a whole is also still low compared to 2019. According to the HESTA accommodation statistics, Switzerland recorded 1,104,430 overnight stays by Chinese tourists in the year before the coronavirus pandemic. So far this year, 568,023 overnight stays by Chinese tourists have been registered.
