The public prosecutor's office has dropped the case against four police officers after fatal shots were fired at the kidnapper of former vaccination chief Christoph Berger. The kidnapper was killed during a police operation in Wallisellen ZH in 2022.

The police officers reacted proportionately, the Zurich public prosecutor's office announced on Friday. The kidnapper had pulled out a gun, shot and killed his girlfriend, who was sitting next to him in the car.

The police officers "had to neutralize" the danger posed by the man, it added.

The 38-year-old had kidnapped Berger, the former president of the Federal Commission for Vaccination Issues, in the Zurich Oberland and demanded 300,000 francs. However, he let the former head of vaccination go.
