Ferries in Greece are at a standstill for the third day in a row today. There will be no ferry services on Friday either. Tourists and residents of islands that do not have an airport will therefore remain cut off from the outside world. There are also supply bottlenecks on some islands, Greek television reported. The Greek seamen's union is demanding a 15 percent pay rise for its members, while the shipowners have so far only offered 3 percent. The PNO union is threatening to extend the strike indefinitely. Ferry traffic is as important in Greece as rail traffic is in other European countries due to the large number of inhabited islands.
