Stromboli is one of the most active volcanoes. Now it is rumbling again on the Mediterranean island. The authorities are alarmed.

On the Italian volcanic island of Stromboli in the Mediterranean, the highest alert level is red following a violent rumbling of the volcano of the same name. The authorities called on the population to keep an eye on the situation and to follow the instructions of the civil defense closely. Previously, the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (IGNV) had detected a sudden increase in seismic activity. Stromboli, which is more than 920 meters high, is one of the most active volcanoes in Europe.

The mountain has been particularly active again for several days: large quantities of lava are pouring out of the crater, which then make their way several hundred meters steeply down into the sea. Videos show thick smoke rising high into the sky. Only a few hundred people regularly live on Stromboli - an island that belongs to the Aeolian Islands. Many tourists travel there by sea from the mainland or Sicily to climb the volcano.

Stromboli is also known through literature and film: In Jules Verne's 19th century adventure novel "Journey to the Center of the Earth", the book's heroes are catapulted back up through Stromboli's crater at the end. Italian director Roberto Rossellini shot the film "Stromboli" there shortly after the Second World War, with his future wife Ingrid Bergman in the leading role.
