The announced end of fact-checkers on Facebook in the USA is "worrying" for Federal Councillor Beat Jans. Marc Zuckerberg's announcement took him by surprise, the SP politician told the Swiss Publishers Association on Thursday.

However, Jans is not merely pessimistic about the announcement. The fact that the big tech platforms are no longer prepared to separate the true from the untrue may ultimately be an opportunity for the traditional media, said the Minister of Justice.
At some point, the population will feel this and a counter-movement will be needed. His own X account is already "quite a dump", said Jans.
Meta boss Marc Zuckerberg announced this week that he would intervene less strongly in future when it comes to the dissemination of false claims on his platforms. Restrictions on controversial topics such as migration are to be lifted.
Instead of relying on fact-checkers, Meta will in future rely on users themselves to submit ratings for posted statements, so-called "community notes". Zuckerberg is thus following the example of Elon Musk and his platform X, formerly Twitter.
