A benefit concert was held in Prague to commemorate the shooting rampage at Charles University a year ago. Specially composed works were played in the University Church of St. Salvator to commemorate the 14 people who died in the attack on December 21, 2023. In addition to the families of the victims, survivors and President Petr Pavel also took part in the televised memorial service. "We keep asking ourselves: why?" said David Fribert, spokesman for the bereaved.

Afterwards, the participants and members of the public gathered for a minute's silence at the site of the incident in the city center.

A student armed with an assault rifle had killed 14 people in the main building of the Faculty of Humanities in the middle of the pre-Christmas period. He then shot himself. Even before this bloody deed, the authorities are convinced that he killed his father at home and randomly shot a walker and his daughter in a city forest.

Donations for young people's mental health

The money raised by the benefit concert will go to a foundation that promotes the mental health of children and young people. A center for resilience, i.e. dealing with crises, has now been established at the university. "The past year has taught us how important it is to stand together and overcome evil, problems and pitfalls together," said University Rector Milena Kralickova.
