This news caused silent horror among the passengers of flight NE130 of the Egyptian Nesma Airlines from Cairo to Taif in Saudi Arabia. The scheduled flight had only been in the air for an hour when the co-pilot announced in a broken voice over the intercom: "We apologize for the detour of the flight to King Abdulaziz Airport in Jeddah due to the death of my brother and friend, Captain Hassan, the pilot."
Passengers were shocked, but there were no panic attacks, although many passengers said they were touched by the co-pilot's sad voice, as reported by the BBC.
The co-pilot was therefore also criticized after the incident. Although informing the passengers of an unforeseen event would have been correct, he should have spared the details and only spoken of an "emergency on board" in order to prevent a panic-like reaction from the passengers.
Heart attack as cause of death
Shortly after the announcement, the Airbus A320 touched down safely at Jeddah's King Abdulaziz Airport. A replacement pilot then took the plane to its actual destination.
According to Egyptian media reports, Captain Adas died of a sudden heart attack. The man suffered from obesity and had only recently lost his brother, so he was probably in poor health.
