A Peruvian fisherman has survived more than three months in a small boat on the high seas. The 61-year-old was able to leave hospital on Saturday, according to the Peruvian navy.

The fisherman was rescued on Tuesday after spending 94 days adrift in international waters in his wooden boat.

He had set sail with his boat from the port of San Juan de Marcona in southwest Peru on December 7. Due to bad weather conditions and the current, he veered off course and his small boat drifted out to sea. On Tuesday, the fisherman was finally rescued by the crew of an Ecuadorian ship near the port town of Chimbote, around a thousand kilometers north of San Juan de Marcona.

In good condition

He arrived in good physical condition. "He was able to walk and wash himself. Shocked, but in good physical condition," said the harbor master of the Peruvian navy, Jorge González. "It's a miracle that they found my dad (...). We never gave up hope," his daughter told radio station RPP.

Napa told local media that he had survived by eating cockroaches, birds and a turtle. "I didn't want to die, for my mother. I have a two-month-old granddaughter, I held on to that. Every day I thought about my mother," he said.
