The situation regarding the shortage of skilled workers in Switzerland has eased considerably due to the more subdued economy. This is particularly true for the IT sector.

However, it is still far too early to sound the all-clear, according to the Swiss Skills Shortage Index 2024 published on Thursday by HR service provider Adecco. Although the search for suitable personnel has become easier, it is still more difficult than before the pandemic.

In the last two years, a catch-up effect from the coronavirus pandemic has ensured that the skills shortage index reached a peak in 2023. In the current year, however, there are now signs of a decline to the level of 2022.

Adecco explains this by the fact that 7% fewer jobs were advertised this year. On the other hand, the unemployment rate has risen from 2.0% to 2.4%. The economic slowdown has therefore had a "noticeable impact" on the Swiss job market this year.

Healthcare specialists in demand

Looking at the individual professions, the situation in the healthcare sector remains acute. For example, there is still a shortage of medical specialists, nurses and pharmacists everywhere. The construction industry is in second place, followed by the electrical sector.

Meanwhile, the situation in the IT sector has clearly eased. While IT specialists were in second place last year, this year they are in seventh place.
