The consumer advice center warns of fraud attempts on Disney+ and Netflix customers. Cyber criminals are targeting payment data.

No time? blue News summarizes for you

  • Phishing emails at Netflix claim that the account has been blocked and request that payment details be updated, although the sender address and links do not originate from Netflix.
  • Similar phishing attempts at Disney+ claim that the subscription has been suspended due to payment problems and ask for an update of the billing information.

As the days get shorter and it gets colder outside, people spend more time indoors. Fraudsters are taking advantage of this and are now increasingly targeting customers of the streaming services Netflix and Disney+.

The consumer advice center is therefore warning against the latest phishing emails, which cyber criminals are using to obtain users' payment information. Emails with the subject "Your account has been blocked" or "Please update your information" are currently landing in many email inboxes. The consumer advice center advises not to open such emails and to move them directly to the spam folder.

This phishing email is aimed at Netflix customers

The email, which is intended to encourage Netflix subscribers to disclose their payment details, explains that the account has been blocked due to a payment problem. In order for this to be lifted, you should update your payment information via the "Update my payment details" link. However, the sender's address and link have no connection to Netflix. You should ignore the subject line "Your account is blocked". The informal and personal form of address "Hello" also makes it easy to identify the email as a phishing email. If you receive such an email, move it to your spam folder unopened.

This is how Disney+ customers are supposed to be scammed

Another email aimed at Disney+ customers uses a similar scam. The subject line is "Please update your information". The email itself states that the subscription has been temporarily suspended. Allegedly, the bank refused to debit the account during the last attempt to renew the subscription.

In order to be able to use Disney+ again, the billing information would have to be updated via the link provided, otherwise you would lose your "advantage". Not only does the sender's address look dubious, but the inscription on the link button "Consult the procedure" should set alarm bells ringing. You can also safely move this email to your spam folder without replying.

In general, you should not open suspicious-looking emails with a strange subject and a dubious-looking sender address. If in doubt, you can call the customer hotline of the company in question and ask whether such an email has been sent to customers or whether there are any discrepancies with your account.
