The Swiss people should vote on the future nuclear repository in the Zurich municipality of Stadel. This is the demand of the National Cooperative for the Disposal of Radioactive Waste (Nagra). The repository is expected to be built from 2045.

On Tuesday, Nagra submitted the general license application for the nuclear repository near Stadel. With the 30,000-page application, it wants to prove that the site proposed in 2022 is the best location and that a deep geological repository there will meet the highest safety standards in the long term.

"We show that we can build and operate a deep geological repository safely, even if it is challenging," Nagra CEO Matthias Braun was quoted as saying in a press release. Nagra proves that the repository is compatible with environmental protection.

At the same time, Nagra is calling for a broad debate on the project and direct democratic legitimization with a referendum. A committee critical of the repository had already called for a national referendum on Friday.
