There are two new pass bike routes in the Gotthard region. These lead over the Furka, Nufenen, Lukmanier, Passo del Sole and Oberalp passes. Route 84 leads over four Alpine passes, Route 85 over five, as announced by Andermatt Sedrun Disentis Marketing AG on Tuesday. The Gotthard can be circumnavigated on the two "spectacularly scenic" routes.

The two routes were created as part of the federal government's New Regional Policy (NRP). This is a "flagship project", said Dieter Bogner, Head of the San Gottardo Program Office, when asked by Keystone-SDA. This is because it is the only NRP project that has been implemented by four cantons, three language regions and eleven municipalities.

Construction is still underway on sections

The cantons of Uri, Graubünden, Valais and Ticino as well as the regions of Urserntal, Surselva, Obergoms and Bellinzonese e Valli and their tourism organizations were involved, according to the press release.

According to Bogner, however, it will be some time before the routes are completely finished. Construction work is still required on sections in Uri and Ticino to make the routes more accessible. This will still take around two years.

For "sporty, mountain and nature-loving" bikers

According to the press release, the routes are intended for "sporty, mountain and nature-loving" bikers who enjoy tackling descents. The ascents would be supported by public transport.

The San Gottardo program (PSG) was responsible for financing and coordinating the conceptual project work. This is a joint project between Uri, Graubünden and Ticino, which has served as a political instrument for the regional development of the Gotthard region since 2008. The federal government and cantons contribute funds via the PSG.
