After Typhoon Kong-rey hit the East Asian island of Taiwan, the number of dead and injured has risen further. In the capital Taipei, strong winds and rain uprooted more than 1,000 trees, some of which fell on cars and caused serious damage, according to the city administration. "The wind and rain here yesterday were really scary," said a local resident to the German Press Agency, who was looking for her car, which she thought was under a fallen tree. The zoo in the capital did not open the day after the typhoon because of clean-up work and heavy damage, according to its own information.

Typhoon with a radius of more than 320 kilometers

More than 1,400 incidents such as road damage, fallen trees and mudslides were reported across the country. The authorities brought at least 11,588 people to safety in particularly vulnerable areas due to the typhoon. According to the weather authority, the radius of "Kong-reys" was more than 320 kilometers, making it the largest typhoon to hit Taiwan in almost three decades. The last time "Herb" had exceeded a radius of 300 kilometers was in 1996.

Meteorologists were expecting heavy rainfall from "Kong-rey" on the east coast of China. According to the weather authority, the storm, which has weakened, is expected to brush the province south of the Shanghai metropolis and then turn northeast towards Japan.
