After nine months, new registrations of commercial vehicles in Switzerland and Liechtenstein in 2024 are higher than a year ago. The proportion of electrically powered trucks has continued to increase.

By the end of September, new registrations of goods and passenger transport vehicles had risen by 2.8 percent to 31,908, as reported by the Swiss Automobile Importers Association on Friday. The number of light commercial vehicles increased by 3.5 percent and that of heavy commercial vehicles by 7.2 percent. In contrast, there was a slight decline in motorhomes at a high level.

According to the association, growth slowed somewhat over the course of the year. In addition, there are still pent-up purchases from the time of the Covid pandemic. The high growth in cars within the passenger transport vehicles sub-category is also striking.

Almost one in ten new trucks now has a fully electric drive. The market share is now 9.8 percent and rising. This is basically good news for Auto-Schweiz. However, the framework conditions for the increasing electrification of company fleets still need to be greatly improved.

For example, the fast-charging infrastructure in many places is not designed for trucks, neither in terms of space requirements nor in terms of power. Logistics companies are also hesitant to make new purchases due to the uncertainty surrounding the exemption from the performance-based heavy vehicle charge for electric drives from 2030.
