In 2023, 25 people died in alcohol-related accidents in Switzerland.
Men were responsible for 88% of fatal accidents and 85% of serious accidents.
The canton of Geneva recorded the highest accident rate with 1.09 accidents per 10,000 inhabitants.
The TCS urges caution during the festive season and continues to emphasize the central importance of prevention measures against drink-driving.
2023 is a bad year for statistics on accidents on Swiss roads: 25 people died in alcohol-related accidents, a figure that reflects the average of recent years. Particularly striking: 88 percent of fatal accidents were caused by men, as a study by the TCS shows. There is also a clear overrepresentation of male drivers when it comes to serious injuries.
Of the 411 serious alcohol-related accidents in 2023, 349 cases (84.91%) were caused by men, while women were only responsible for 62 serious accidents. This gender-specific difference remains a constant in the accident statistics.
The canton of Geneva has led the statistics for serious alcohol-related accidents for seven years. In 2023, Geneva recorded 1.09 accidents per 10,000 inhabitants, twice as many as the Swiss average of 0.49. Ticino (0.73) and Basel-Stadt (0.66) follow in second and third place. In some cantons, including Basel-Stadt, Vaud and Fribourg, the accident rate rose noticeably compared to 2022.
Appenzell Innerrhoden remains accident-free
A ray of hope: Appenzell Innerrhoden reported no serious alcohol-related accidents in 2023. Schaffhausen (0.12) and Zug (0.23) were also among the safest cantons. However, the small number of inhabitants in these regions puts the figures into perspective, as a single accident has a major impact on the statistics.
In absolute figures, the canton of Vaud recorded the highest number of alcohol-related fatalities with five accidents. It was followed by Bern, Geneva and Zurich with four fatalities each. In total, fatal alcohol-related accidents occurred in nine cantons.
In view of the upcoming festive season, the TCS is calling for caution: "If you drive, don't drink - if you drink, don't drive." Despite intensive prevention campaigns, the issue of drink-driving remains a key challenge for road safety.
