More than 30 people have been injured in a ski lift accident in Astún, Spain. According to initial information, nine are in a critical condition and there are also eight seriously injured, the government of the Aragon region in the north-east of the country announced. The exact cause of the accident is still being investigated, it said. According to initial findings, a problem with the suspension cable may have caused a chairlift to come loose from its anchoring.

The ski station was closed immediately and numerous rescue operations are underway. According to media reports, several ambulances and four helicopters are being used to rescue those affected and take them to nearby hospitals. The nationalities of the injured have not yet been released.
