The economic outlook in Switzerland is deteriorating again. The economic barometer compiled by the KOF Swiss Economic Institute at ETH Zurich fell surprisingly sharply in December.

At 99.5 points, it is also just below the 100-point mark. The outlook for the Swiss economy is therefore rather subdued, as the KOF announced on Monday.

The barometer is thus below the expectations of analysts, who had forecast a value between 100 and 102 points. The previous month's value for November was revised upwards by 1.1 points to 102.9 points.

The indicator bundles for the economic sectors showed a uniformly negative trend in the month under review, according to the report. This was particularly true for the manufacturing industry and other services, as well as for the hospitality industry, foreign demand and consumer demand.

In the manufacturing industry, the indicators for production activity, the order situation and foreign demand were under particular pressure. According to the KOF, the indicators for the inventory situation are an exception, as they are bucking the negative trend somewhat.

Within the manufacturing sector, the outlook deteriorated in particular for chemical and pharmaceutical companies, textile companies and companies in the automotive and mechanical engineering sectors, according to the KOF. By contrast, the outlook for the wood, glass, stone and soil sector is more favorable.
