In Switzerland, nine out of ten fatal accidents involving alcohol are caused by men. According to an analysis by the Touring Club Switzerland, this overrepresentation of men can also be seen in accidents with serious injuries.

Last year, there were 25 fatal accidents in Switzerland caused by drink-driving, as reported by the Touring Club Switzerland (TCS) on Thursday. In 22 of these accidents, a man was responsible at the wheel, in only three accidents was a woman at the wheel.

According to the TCS, the picture is similar for serious injuries: of the 411 serious accidents under the influence of alcohol, men were at the wheel in almost 85 percent of cases. 349 accidents under the influence of alcohol were caused by men and 62 by women.

Most serious accidents under the influence of alcohol occurred in the canton of Geneva. According to the TCS, the western Swiss canton has led this statistic since 2017. Geneva is followed by the cantons of Ticino, Basel-Stadt, Vaud, Valais, Fribourg and Neuchâtel. Appenzell-Innerrhoden has not recorded a single serious alcohol-related accident.

In absolute figures, alcohol was responsible for the most fatal accidents on Vaud's roads, with five fatal accidents. This was followed by the cantons of Bern, Geneva and Zurich with four fatal accidents each, and Fribourg, Neuchâtel and Valais with two fatal accidents each.

In total, there were fatal accidents under the influence of alcohol in nine of the 26 Swiss cantons. In view of the upcoming holidays, the TCS reminds people that they must choose between drinking and driving.
