China is willing to work together with the new US administration under Donald Trump, Xi said at the start of the meeting on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Community (Apec) summit in Peru, according to the press present. The aim was to maintain communication between the two superpowers, expand cooperation and overcome differences.
Outgoing President Biden and Xi met in person for the first time in a year. Relations between the world's two largest economies have long been strained. The meeting was overshadowed by Trump, who will replace Biden in office in January. The Republican has announced far-reaching new tariffs on goods from China.
Trump had already taken a tough stance on China during his first term of office from 2017 to 2021 and introduced large-scale punitive tariffs on goods from the country, which his successor Biden later retained. China responded with some countermeasures such as export controls on important raw materials, but according to observers should now be better prepared if Trump fulfills his election promise.
