The governor of the Turkish metropolis of Istanbul has banned demonstrations in the city center for women's rights and had the area cordoned off. In a statement, he justified this by "ensuring public order and preventing crime" in the center, which is popular with tourists.

Gatherings are permitted in certain places away from the city center. Women's rights organizations had called for demonstrations to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.

More than 300 femicides last year

Three years ago, Turkey withdrew from the Istanbul Convention on the Protection of Women, which led to fierce protests. According to the organization "We Will Stop Femicide", at least 315 women were killed by men in Turkey last year, in most cases the perpetrator was their partner.
