Following the presidential election in Venezuela, which was overshadowed by allegations of fraud, the Supreme Court, which is loyal to the government, has confirmed the victory of authoritarian head of state Nicolás Maduro. This was declared by the president of the court, Caryslia Rodríguez. Due to a cyber attack on the electoral system, it had not been possible to publish the results of the individual voting districts.

The electoral authority, which is loyal to the party, had declared President Maduro, who has been in power since 2013, the winner of the ballot at the end of July. However, it has not yet published a breakdown of the results. The opposition accuses the government of electoral fraud and is claiming victory for its candidate Edmundo González Urrutia. The USA and several Latin American countries have already recognized the election victory of the ex-diplomat. The European Union and the Organization of American States also doubt the official election result.

The UN Commission of Inquiry on Venezuela warned on social media that both the Supreme Court and the electoral authority were neither independent nor impartial. Both institutions were headed by representatives of the ruling party and had been involved in state repression. The government had exerted undue influence over the court.
