The US government under President Joe Biden has announced further sanctions against Russia shortly before the end of his term of office. The measures are aimed at around 250 individuals and institutions associated with the Russian arms industry, the US State Department announced. The sanctions are also intended to prevent Russia from circumventing existing measures - particularly through actors in the People's Republic of China.

As a result of the sanctions, US citizens and people who are in the United States are prohibited from doing business with the sanctioned companies and people. The sanctions also make international business much more difficult for those affected.
The USA had already imposed extensive new sanctions against the Russian energy sector at the end of last week. They add to a long series of measures that the US and its allies - including the European Union - have taken since the start of the war of aggression against Ukraine to weaken Russia's revenue and military capabilities.
At the same time, the Biden administration is working to send substantial military aid to Kiev in the final meters of its term in order to deploy the funds already authorized by Congress in a timely manner.
Biden will hand over the office to Donald Trump on January 20. There is concern in Kiev and other European capitals that the Republican could cut support for Ukraine in order to pressure the government there into negotiations with Moscow.
