American astronauts on the International Space Station (ISS) are calling on their fellow citizens to vote in the US election. "Whether you're sitting, standing or floating - the important thing is that you vote," wrote Don Pettit and Nick Hague in a post on Instagram.

The Nasa astronauts posted a photo in which they appear to be floating in the ISS together with their colleagues Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams. They show patriotic-looking socks towards the camera. "Proud to be American" was written on the bottom of two astronauts' socks. The official account for astronauts of the US space agency NASA also shared the photo on the platform.

According to CNN, the astronauts themselves had already voted before election day. The votes cast in space were transmitted from the space station via a Nasa satellite network.
