UN Special Envoy Geir Pedersen still sees major hurdles for Syria despite the positive mood for change. The developments in the country "generate great hope, but we all know that there are still many challenges ahead," said Pedersen during a visit to Damascus. The changes brought about by the fall of ruler Bashar al-Assad are "immense".

According to Pedersen, major tasks now lie ahead to put the country on the right track: a political process that includes all Syrians, economic recovery and an end to international sanctions as well as immediate humanitarian support for the people in the country and all refugees who want to return.

The transitional government must get state institutions up and running and ensure "law and order and security", said Pedersen. This also includes dealing with crimes from the years of the Assad government and preventing acts of revenge.
