The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, is critical of the relaxation of hate speech rules at the Facebook group Meta. Without naming the company, Türk advocates clear regulation of content on social media.

"Allowing hate speech and harmful content online has real consequences," Türk wrote on the short messaging service X. "Regulating such content is not censorship. My office calls for accountability and governance in the digital space, in line with human rights."

Meta has just softened some of the rules against hate speech for its services in the US and announced the end of fact-checking. For example, homosexuality and transsexuality may be denigrated again in future. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg justified this with too many restrictions that would have led to censorship. In addition to Facebook, Meta also includes the photo and video app Instagram as well as WhatsApp and the short message service Threads.
