According to the Palestinian relief organization UNRWA, seven babies have already died of hypothermia in the Gaza Strip. The UN agency warned on Platform X that there was insufficient protection for around 7,700 newborns due to a lack of shelter as a result of the war.

At the end of December, the Palestinian news agency Wafa had already reported that four babies had died of hypothermia.

Hundreds of thousands of Palestinians have lost their homes as a result of more than 15 months of fighting between the Israeli army and the Islamist Hamas. Their tents made of plastic sheeting offer little protection against the cold, storms and rain. Temperatures are currently dropping below ten degrees at night. The few hospitals still in operation are overcrowded.

The Israeli authority responsible for Palestinian affairs, Cogat, emphasized that it is working with international aid organizations such as Rahma Worldwide to provide people with tents, blankets, warm clothing and hygiene products.
