The pro-government Ukrainian military channel Deep State has confirmed the capture of the strategically important small town of Kurakhove in the east of the attacked country by Russian troops. Almost the entire town in the Donetsk region has been occupied by Russian forces, giving them the opportunity to advance westwards, the military experts wrote on Telegram.

On Monday, the Russian Ministry of Defense had already announced that it had taken the city. There had been no confirmation from the Ukrainian side.

Deep State also reported that the Russians had moved some units to another area near the city of Myrnohrad, where an increase in Russian attacks is expected. The control of Kurakhove gives the Russians numerous advantages to shift their offensive operations to the west.

The battles for Kurakhove lasted around two months. The Ukrainians were thus able to hold the town for longer than experts had actually expected. Only a fraction of the former 18,000 inhabitants remained. A large part of the town is now just a pile of rubble after the heavy fighting. Moscow's losses are considered high.
