Following the advance of Ukrainian troops into the neighboring Russian region of Kursk, Kiev has set up a military command for the area under its control.

The commandant's office is to take care of maintaining law and order and the priority needs of the population, Commander-in-Chief Olexander Syrskyj said during a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Selenskyj. Major General Eduard Moskaljov has been appointed head of the commandant's office.

Syrskyi went on to say that the Ukrainian military had taken control of 82 locations and 1150 square kilometers of territory since the beginning of the offensive. The information could not be independently verified.

The Ukrainian armed forces have been attacking the Russian region of Kursk with a major ground offensive since August 6. It is the first advance of this kind since the start of the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine in February 2022.
