Donald Trump is putting together his government team, which is characterized by a tough stance on migration and foreign policy. The first personnel appointments show that the announced mass deportation of migrants and a critical stance towards China will be central themes of his second term in office.

Focus on migration policy

Stephen Miller, known for his strict migration plans during Trump's first term of office, is returning to the White House. He is to act as deputy chief of staff and will be given far-reaching powers without the need for Senate confirmation. At a campaign event, Miller emphasized: "America is for Americans - and only Americans." He promised to remove criminal migrants and gangs from the country.

Tom Homan, another migration hardliner, will oversee mass deportations as "border czar". In Trump's first term, he was responsible for the controversial separation of children at the border.

New leadership in homeland security

According to CNN, Kristi Noem, Governor of South Dakota, is set to take over as Homeland Security Secretary, overseeing immigration and border authorities. Noem, who was previously floated as a possible running mate, hit the headlines after describing a controversial decision about her dog in her memoir. She argued that this showed her ability to make tough decisions.

Foreign policy focus

On foreign policy, a tough line on China and Iran is expected. Mike Waltz, a Republican congressman, is expected to become National Security Advisor. He described China as the USA's "biggest rival" and called for an end to the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East in order to focus on China. Waltz emphasized that the US should reconsider its support for Ukraine and called for more engagement from European countries.

Potential foreign ministers

Senator Marco Rubio, known for his tough stance on China and Iran, is being touted as a possible Secretary of State. However, Trump could still change his mind, as Richard Grenell, former US ambassador to Germany, is also considered a candidate.

New UN ambassador

Elise Stefanik, a loyal supporter of Trump, is to serve as US ambassador to the United Nations. She has shown herself to be a loyal ally of Trump in the past and has supported his controversial claims of electoral fraud.

Environmental policy and energy

Lee Zeldin, a long-time Trump supporter, is to head the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). He plans to loosen regulations to expand domestic oil and gas production while promising high environmental standards. Trump denies the existence of a climate crisis and plans to withdraw the USA from the Paris Climate Agreement once again.

Following his election victory, Trump is due to be sworn in for a second term as president on January 20.
